The game consisted of four factions, only one of which a player could join. From there, the player could travel to other worlds like Forbidden Valley or Gnarled Forest. At that point, the players can travel to Nimbus Station if they pay for membership, where they choose which faction to join. After travelling through the world and discovering the Spider Queen's location, the player destroys the Spider Queen at the Block Yard and claims their first Property, where they could place collected models and bricks. Here, a disaster involving Paradox has infected Avant Gardens with Maelstrom and released a beast called the Spider Queen. The player, aboard the ship, escapes to Avant Gardens with the aid of Sky Lane. The Venture Explorer, a ship carrying new recruits is being attacked by the Maelstrom. The factions worked together to create the Nexus Force in order to destroy the Maelstrom and its minions. After the incident, the explorers decided to form their own factions, Doctor Overbuild creating the Assembly, Duke Exeter forming the Sentinels, Hael Storm leading the Venture League, and the Baron's protégé Vanda Darkflame creating the Paradox. However, even though Doctor Overbuild plugged the hole, the stress caused Crux to explode into thousands of other worlds. After having found it on the mysterious planet Crux, the greedy tycoon of the expedition, Baron Typhonus, was pulled into the source, fusing with it to create a maelstrom of chaotic dark energy. The premise is that years ago, a team of four minifigures went on a great journey to seek the last essence of pure Imagination: Doctor Overbuild, Duke Exeter, Hael Storm, and Baron Typhonus. It means combat without numbers, the action instead based on the bashing and smashing we’re familiar with from, again, those Traveller’s Tales games.Lego Universe took place in an alternate universe populated by Lego minifigures. It means no levelling, character progression instead happening by way of collectable items that either empower, customise or both.
In practice, this means a massively multiplayer game with no unfathomably complicated four-hour raids, instead focusing on shorter missions and more of them. If that’s not enough, every three months or so the game also goes to LEGO’s ‘inner circle,’ a briefly mentioned, shadowy cabal made up of 5,000 of LEGO’s biggest fans. Second, it’s bringing in kids and adults every week to playtest their latest version. First, it’s talking to Traveller’s Tales, which is an expert at making games kid-friendly. To make sure everyone can, NetDevil is doing a few things. It should ultimately be enjoyable to those of us who are older, sure, but children need to be able to understand it. That’s another LEGO expectation: LEGO Universe is a massively multiplayer game that 8 to 12-year-olds are expected to play.
